Step 1. Don't clean shave your neck.
"Contrary to popular belief a harsh, defined line under your beard does not give you the illusion of a jaw, it gives the beardians the illusion of being an idiot. Invest in a good beard trimmer, thin out the neck hair and blend into the beard. The beardians can go as short as they like on the neck but avoid a George Michael-style chin strap at all costs."

Step 2. Trim your upper cheeks.
"As we get older, our beards seem to creep up towards the eyes as if they're trying to escape from our faces. Avoid the temptation to shave the top of the beard line too aggressively - beards should appear soft and natural. Shave any rogue hairs around the sideburns and cheeks, or you'll end up looking like you're pulling a shift at an Eighties leather bar (not necessarily a bad look but one that should only be embraced deliberately, rather than by accident - personally, it's not for me)."

Step 3. Keep it combed.
"On shoots, hair stylists are always telling me to give it a quick comb through. I must admit, as strange as it feels to "brush" your face, flattening down any runaway bristles does make you look a lot smarter and give the face better definition."

Step 4. Don't reach for the hair dye.
"One of my favourite things about beards is how unique they are.

Like weird hairy fingerprints. Each one is different, made up of a plethora of different colors. Mine's started to grey on the sides, making me look like a wise badger. It's great. Embrace it.

No need to dye it or it'll look too unnaturally uniform and it'll look like it's stuck on."

Step 5. Keep your scruff a bit scruffy

"Beards are manly and while they shouldn't look unkempt, they shouldn't look too perfect either. If in doubt think Jesus as opposed to Conchita Wurst."

Step 6. Use the best beard oil
"Apply beard oil just before you leave the house. Remember to only use a pea size drop, you don't want it looking greasy. If you oppose the oil, try a balm to keep the stray hairs intact."
